In the interview room, Steve Smith sat glum faced as DCI Davies went through the questions once again, that he had previously put to him and again received the same answers.

“Mr. Smith, I put it to you that following the blazing row that you have admitted to having with Don Phillips and if, as you say, he fell backwards into the river when your dog attacked him, you deliberately left the scene without making any effort to raise the alarm. This you did knowing that he would drown”.

Smith replied, “No, that’s not true”.

“You have already said that you left the scene so that you wouldn’t be implicated”.

Steve Smith remained silent, unable to refute this statement. Then, after a short pause, the DCI charged him with the manslaughter of Don Phillips.
